Whitt awarded Citizen of the Year

That selfless act was recognized Thursday by the Chamber of Commerce of Sandusky County, as she was presented with the Citizen of the Year award during the annual awards dinner celebrating it's 60th anniversary.

For the past three years, Whitt, a Clyde resident, has been spending her time helping oncology patients, whether she voluntarily sits with them as she gives them a hand message, or helps them find accessories such as wigs and skin care products to help them complete a new look.

"I'm just doing something I love to do," Whitt said. "Whether it's helping cancer patients or taking my grandkids to volunteer."

The award was not revealed to Whitt before it was announced at the dinner.

Whitt began helping oncology patients in Angie's Boutique, which is owned by her daughter. Angie Mougey. Originally located in Memorial Hospital, it is now located in Bellevue.

However, if a patient was too ill to come to the boutique, Whitt would personally deliver any items of need to the patient's home.

Whitt said she became interested when Mougey planned to have a day for cancer patients at her boutique. She said it was that particular day that she knew she wanted to become move involved.

Her desire to help eventually lead her to take a class in prosthetics, which led her to become a certifies breast fitter.

"She just has a really big heart," said Mougey.

Whitt also helped with the Sandusky County Cancer Fund Committee, and in the past year, she was helped coach and assist with Special Olympics and baseball at the School of Hope.
